Biophysics on the World Stage: IUPAB Congratulates the 2026 Nobel Laureates in Physiology or Medicine
The International Union for Pure and Applied Biophysics (IUPAB) proudly celebrates the award of the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine to Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann, and Georg Nagel for their pioneering work on light-gated ion channels and optogenetics.
Beginning with the biophysical isolation and characterisation of algal photoreceptors, their work culminated in a technology that uses light to control targeted cells in living organisms.
This recognition highlights the essential role of interdisciplinary biophysical research in solving fundamental biological questions and enabling biomedical breakthroughs. We offer our heartiest congratulations to the Laureates!
