Transport

Uber and taxis are available for from Cairns International Airport to transport conference attendees to their accommodation. There is also a Shuttle Bus service that runs between the Airport and the Cairns City Centre, Palm Cove or Port Douglas, operated by Exemplar Coaches and Limousines  (more information here). If you are staying in Cairns, it is only about 10 – 15 minutes by car from the airport to the city centre. In this case the shuttle is no cheaper than a taxi, and if you arrive with a colleague and share a taxi, this would be cheaper than taking the shuttle bus.

The Novotel Cairns Oasis Resort is situated approximately a 200 m walk from the Cairns City Bus Station should conference attendees wish to stay longer in Australia and utilise the TransLink Bus Service to visit other locations.

Dining Out and Attractions

Cairns has many restaurants covering a large variety of cuisines to suit all tastes, e.g., Thai, Vietnamese, Japanese, Italian, Greek amongst others. On Monday 15th of September and Friday 19th of September, dinners are organised at the Novotel, and these are included in the registration fee. On Tuesday 16th – Thursday 18th of September, the scientific sessions finish at 20.00 and conference attendees are free to explore Cairns and choose a restaurant of their own liking. Or, if attendees wish, they are welcome to remain at the Novotel, which has its own restaurant. In Cairns it is usual for restaurants to close at 22.00, and some even at 21.00. So make sure that you don’t head out for a meal too late.
Based on the organisers’ own experience here are a few restaurants that we can recommend:
Villa Romana, Cnr Aplin St & Esplanade (Italian)
Little Sister, 101 Esplanade (Asian fusion)
Wawawa Izakaya, 92A Lake St (Japanese)

To see the fish, reptiles and amphibians of the Great Barrier Reef and Far North Queensland, the organisers recommend a visit to the Cairns Aquarium (https://www.cairnsaquarium.com.au/), which is open every day from 9.30 – 15.30 (last admission 14.30). The Aquarium is located at 5 Florence St, only a 2 minute walk from the Novotel.
